At our January AGM Maureen Noone talked to us about 'Must have foliage for the flower arrangers garden'  

She used the foliage below in a stunning pedestal arrangement.

BERGENIA

Ballawley

Good shape and lovely winter colouring.  Ideal for centre of design as focal point.

 

Cordifolia

Nice paddle shape

Tubby Andrews.  Variegated

Best in part shade.  

Needs slug repellent

CUPRESSUS

Coniferous.   

Ideal for change of contrast.  Generally easily grown.

CORYLUS

Avellana Contorta.  

Good for Winter designs

Very architectural

 

ELEAGNUS 

ebbingei

Gilt Edge or Limelight.  

Good for outline foliage for large designs

Easily grown can become quite large.

likes coastal areas.

EUONYMUS

Fortunei 

Silver Queen or Emerald n Gold

Ideal for medium sized designs.

Easily grown but caterpillars can spoil the leaf.

 

FATSHEDERA 

All varieties are useful with leaves varying from small to  very large

Lizei   plain leaf.  Lemon and lime yellow centre.  Easily grown but needs a wall to lean on

Pia    wavy edges

Variegata  white edges

FATSIA

Japonica.  Large leaves ideal for focal points and for base placements in modern styles.

 

FATSIA

Aurea.  Gold edged.  

Requires some shade to develop colour.

Marginata.  White edged.  Requires some shade to develop colour. (not shown)

GRISELINIA

 

Variegata splashed yellow (shown)

 

Dixons Cream yellow centre

Littoralis  plain leaf (shown)

The plain variety are faster growers than the variegated

Colchica Sulphur Heart (Paddys Pride)

Canariensis 

Ivies both good for flowing outline material

 

LIGUSTRUM

Japonicum

Texanum and Howardi are both cultivars of privet but with much larger leaves

PHORMIUM 

Loads of varieties both upright and lax

Sundowner - upright (shown)

Cookianum - lax

Davidiana  Palette 

or Fraseri Red Robin    

Good for medium to large designs

         

PITTOSPORUM

Tenufolium – plain leaf 

Quick grower.  Good outline for smaller designs.

Variegatum

Variegated are much slower growing.  

Good outline for smaller designs.

         

PRUNUS

Laurocerus - variegated laurel

Marbled White, Emerald Green

Ideal for large designs

 

RUSCUS

Aculeatus (butchers broom)   Lovely outline foliage for medium to smaller designs

Easily grown will spread quite quickly.

SKIMMIA

Japonica Rubella 

good filler, prefers shade, easily grown

SALIX

Tortuosa

Ideal for winter and very architectural.  

Easily grown but can become quite large.

This is by no means an exhaustive selection but these are good evergreens and so are available all year.

Three good centres to buy are:

Colne Valley Nurseries, Wakes Colne, Essex

Woottens of Wenhaston, Off the A12 before Southwold.
